Activity Ideas for the STEAM Discovery Centre

STEAM learning — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics — encourages curiosity, experimentation, and creative problem solving.

A standout way to bring these concepts to life is by using the STEAM Discovery Centre. This transparent, interactive unit sparks imagination and hands-on exploration. Its scale-like structure and central ramp provide endless opportunities for playful learning.

Children can use the STEAM Discovery Centre as a balance, testing which items are heavy or light by adding, removing, and swapping out objects. Encourage children to try different ways to balance, like hanging, lining up, or stacking items.

You can also add water to the Light Up Glow Bucket or Translucent Buckets on each side of the scale and experiment with volume.

One of the simplest ways to start exploring STEAM concepts is through water play. Children can watch how water flows across the balance or down the ramp, experimenting with speed, direction, and obstacles. Adding food colouring or bubbles can make this both visually engaging and scientifically stimulating. Children can also pour slime down the ramp to watch it slowly glide and drip down.

For a playful introduction to light and optics, use the Sensory Glow Blocks or Light Up Glow Cylinders  to transform the clear acrylic into an illuminated learning environment. In dim light, children can see shadows and reflections, learning about light, colour, shape, and how objects interact with illumination.

STEAM Discovery Centre can also support creative storytelling by building bridges, castles, machines, or imaginary worlds using glowing shapes or loose parts like small figures, blocks, leaves, or shells.

For some children the simple act of tinkering such as posting, threading, and positioning can provide a sense of calm and can be quite captivating. These simple actions can encourage mindfulness and can help with focus and attention.
