Fun Math Activities with CONNETIX

CONNETIX tiles are a powerful cross-curricular tool. As children build and explore, they engage with key mathematical concepts such as counting, shape recognition, symmetry, measurement, and spatial reasoning. This hands-on approach fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of numeracy skills.

The following activities showcase how to use Connetix tiles to support numeracy development in preschool and kindergarten settings.

Number and Shape activity cards

Number and Shape Cards
The CONNETIX Number and Shape Cards support young children in number and shape recognition by having them match tiles to cards, while also developing their visual scanning, imitation, and spatial skills as they recreate the digits.

Using the chalk marker, get 10 tiles of one colour and 10 of another. On one set, write the numbers 1–10, and on the other, draw matching dot patterns. Let children pair the numbers with the correct quantity.

Number Line

Use chalk marker to write the numbers 0-20 on small CONNETIX squares and ask the children to arrange the numbers on a large magnetic surface. You can expend on this activity by asking the children to fill in the missing numbers. Same activity can be done with shapes.

Using the base plates, write down numbers 1-6. Roll the dice, if a player has that number, place a counter on top. Alternatively, roll 2 dice for Addition Bingo and write down the numbers 2-12.

3-D Shape Building

Find 3D items around the classroom that can be replicated with the various CONNETIX shapes.

Dramatic play with connetix

Dramatic Play

Counting comes naturally when children play pretend with the tiles. For example, they can use the small equilateral triangles to make pizzas and ask each other how many slices they want. Elaborate on this activity by encouraging children to ask and answer questions like, “If I eat 2 slices, how many slices will you have left?” or "How many triangles makes a circle?"

Measuring Heights

Children often use words like "long," "short," and "tall" to describe and compare lengths before learning formal measurement. Their measurement skills can be extended by using uniform informal CONNETIX tiles to model measuring length before introducing rulers and standard units.

Fill in the shape activity

Fill in the Shapes

Use masking tape/painter’s tape around CONNETIX designs. Take out and ask children to fill in each shape. Through tactile exploration, children can discover how different shapes can be combined to create a new one e.g. a hexagon can be made up of 6 small triangles or 2 trapeziums.

Symmetry Puzzles

Using a chalk marker, draw symmetrical images or patterns on 2 CONNETIX tiles. Split up the tiles and mix them around so that children can put them back together. Alternatively, create a symmetrical pattern on one half of the table and invite children to finish the other half.
