At the recent Children at the Heart of the Matter conference in Surrey BC, I was delighted to have an opportunity to check out the Aboriginal Family Resources on the Go (AFROG) bus.
Presented by Tsawwassen First Nation, the A FROG bus is a place where families can interact with other children, parents and caregivers in a First Nations culturally aware environment. Via the specially outfitted bus, the program travels to a variety of predetermined sites in the Surrey and Delta areas.
All are welcome on the A FROG bus, regardless of cultural background, to share in Aboriginal culture and values. Caregivers/parents stay with their children as they explore and learn in an environment of friendship, support to share experiences and learnings.
Funded by British Columbia's Ministry of Children and Family Development and donations from the community it was inspiring how much Rebel-lynne Cheena and Suzette Smith, who run the program, packed into the tidy, inviting space.
They even managed to sneak in a little bed for relaxing little ones!
Apparently the (AFROG) bus program’s funding is being reviewed and is up for renewal this year. The best of luck to Aboriginal Family Resources on the Go in 2020!
